Heroes in Heels supports Y's After Breast Cancer program

Brentwood Home Page news reports
Participants of YMCA's After Breast Cancer program will celebrate survival as they take to the runway for the annual Heroes in Heels fashion show Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the CoolSprings Belk department store.

Entertainer Taj George, a castaway on the reality show Survivor and the wife of former Titans star running back Eddie George, will again be the emcee for the 6:30 p.m. event. George is a mother, author and one-third of the multi-platinum selling R&B group, Sisters with Voices.

The event brings awareness, as well as financial support, to the YMCA's outreach program that helps breast cancer survivors regain strength and range of motion following cancer treatment.

Tickets are available for $20 in advance or for $25 at the door. To purchase advance tickets, call or stop by the Maryland Farms YMCA, (615) 373-2900, 5101 Maryland Way.

This year alone 4,400 Tennessee women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 200 of them will find hope and healing following treatment thanks to the ABC program.

The ABC program is free of charge, to both members and non-members, at the Maryland Farms, Cool Springs, Clarksville and Rutherford County Family YMCAs.

After Breast Cancer provides survivors with a 16-week Y membership along with a customized exercise plan developed by a Pink Ribbon Certified personal trainer, nutrition counseling with a registered dietician, and support from YMCA staff and fellow breast cancer patients and survivors.

Dozens of cancer survivors who have participated in ABC will model Belk’s latest fall fashions at the show. The runway will be located in the Women’s department of Belk.

The ABC Program is made possible by the support of the Y’s annual giving campaign; partnerships with St. Thomas Health Services, the Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition, Minnie Pearl Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation and United Way; and proceeds from the Heroes in Heels event.
