Brentwood Home Page news reports A fourth-quarter safety -- the only points of the second half -- kept Christ Presbyterian from making the state championship game with a 16-14 loss in the TSSAA Class 3A football semifinals at Milan on Friday night.
Sophomore Vic Wharton scored both of the Lions' touchdowns, one on defense and one on offense.
Wharton scooped up a fumble recovery and ran 90 yards to put CPA on the board first for a 7-0 first quarter lead.
Milan tied it in the second quarter on the first of Arkel Coleman's two short scoring runs, a 2-yard TD.
Wharton carried 6 yards for the Lions' second touchdown to put CPA up 14-7. But the Bulldogs knotted it again before halftime on Coleman's 1-yard run.
Both teams went scoreless in the second half until Milan took the final advantage on the safety.
Christ Presbyterian Academy finished the season 12-2 in only its third trip to the semifinal round. The school previously won state football championships in 2000 and '02.
