CONCORD ROAD UPDATE: Oct. 1 remains reopening date

It looks like a bunch of gophers have come to the Concord Road area but in actuality the contractor has drilled these holes to make it easier for the pavement to be removed

Brentwood Home Page news reports
Late Wednesday, Jackie Hunter, construction manager of the Concord Road Expansion Project, released a new timeline for the ongoing work, which has closed the city’s main east west connector between Edmondson Pike and Crockett Road since early June.

Construction Schedule

Remainder of Summer 2010
A heavy emphasis on work from Edmondson Pike to Crockett Road (the closure area) will continue throughout the summer. The remainder of work from Crockett Road to Sunset Road will continue also but will still have areas that can not be fully completed at this time. During this phase:

  • Storm drain installation will continue along Concord Road on the right and left sides from Edmondson Pike to Crockett Road. Some of the storm drain on the right side and at Beech Grove Road has already been installed.
  • Roadway excavation is continuing along Concord Road from Edmondson Pike to Crockett Road in the “Big Cut” area.
  • The box culvert crossing Concord Road is complete with the exception of one wing-wall.

The cut stone form liner gives the box culvert concrete a rustic look similar to all the other inlet and outlet ends of the previously completed box culverts.

  • A gas line will be relocated near the box culvert at the Beech Grove subdivision.
  •  The pedestrian/bike path on the south side of Concord Road will be completed once the slopes from Crockett Road to Sunset Road are constructed to final grade.
  • The installation of a signal cable on the right side along the proposed bike/walk path for Concord Road from Edmondson Pike to Sunset Road is nearing completion. Pull boxes are being installed for the signal cable.
  • The wall from the box culvert near Beech Grove Road to Crockett Road is close to 50 percent complete at this time. A stone veneer facing will be installed after the box culvert and wall have been completed.
  • A temporary road for access into the Beech Grove subdivision has been installed from the Concord Road/Crockett Road intersection for “Local Traffic Only”.

Fall 2010
The majority of excavation work along Concord Road from Edmondson Pike to Crockett Road should be complete. The finishing operation on the slopes and in the new roadway should be taking place. The road closure started on June 1, 2010 and will continue for 120 days as allowed in the contract. During this phase:

  • The road closure will still be in effect until Oct. 1. Once the grading operations are complete, the remainder of the stone and asphalt can commence.
  • The box culvert at Crockett Road will be completed once traffic is moved on the newly constructed section of the box culvert.
  • The independent pedestrian/bike path will be graded and paved. Two small bridges will be constructed for the pedestrian/bike path near the Beech Grove subdivision.
  • Side roads will be excavated or receive embankment material. They will be compacted and prepared for base stone. The addition of curb and gutter as proposed will follow. The side roads will then be paved with the first layers of asphalt. Some of the guardrail will be installed in order to maintain traffic through the project.

Winter 2010

  • The majority of all work should be complete at this point in time. The remaining items will be the asphalt paving, installation of guardrail, pavement marking and general clean up.
  • Some guardrail installation will still be remaining at this time. Signal lights and various roadway signing will be installed.
  • The final asphalt roadway surface will be one of the last things to be done on this project.
  • The permanent pavement markings will then be installed.
