For years, citizens with four-legged friends of the canine variety have hankered for one. On Saturday, Brentwood’s first dog park will be officially opened. A grand opening celebration is planned at 10 a.m. at the new dog park located within the city’s existing Tower Park.

Be warned, however. Dog owners will get a little workout themselves trekking to the new area. Tower Park is located between I-65 and Heritage Drive just north of Concord in the shadow of the WSM radio tower. The designated dog park area has been created on part of the property that’s closest to the interstate. It's a bit of a walk from the Heritage Drive parking lot.

The park is also accessible via the city’s extensive bike and walking trail system.

After years of discussion, in January, the City Commission unanimously voted to allow the city’s parks department to design and build a place where dogs can legally run off leash.

The new dog park is divided into two separate areas – a 1.5-acre one for large dogs and a smaller (.65 acre) one for small dogs.

The site was selected for because of its proximity to existing bathroom facilities and water service and because its location does not impact adjoining property owners or park programs. Parking is available in the city-owned lot located between the FiftyForward Martin Center and the Indoor Sports Complex across Heritage Drive from Tower Park.

Thank you for making one of my dreams come true! For years I have yearned for a nice dog park in Brentwood. Walking my dog Shiloh, on the beautiful trails in the city has been really wonderful and now I will be able to let him off the leash to run and play in a contained safe area with his dog friends!! Thank you City Commissioners!!!
