Charron's good works win Hometown Hero award

Brentwood Home Page news reports
Jim Charron of Brentwood, a retired engineer and contractor, is Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s most recent Hometown Hero.

Charron was honored for spending his time and using his talents to help architecturally restore his church and the schools of Project Reflect, a non-profit organization determined to transform urban America through education and policy reform.

Joan Anderson, an executive assistant at the non-profit, nominated Charron and has experienced first-hand the benefits of his service. She spoke of Jim’s willingness and “offering his gifts and talents generously.”

In addition to voluntarily supervising various construction and renovation projects over the years, Charron has personally helped tile floors, repair windows, remodel kitchens, install drainage systems, and much more. In 2010 he oversaw extensive repairs to a school following the flood and tornado damage that year.  It’s no surprise around the schools of Project Reflect Jim is known as “St. Jim.”

“For years he has done all of our engineers work as no cost.  It’s amazing.   We’re so excited he was chosen,” said Sister Sandra Smithson.

As a leader in his community, Charron has also persuaded businesses to give, gathering excess office furniture, supplies, and equipment to donate to the offices and classrooms of the non-profit.  When asked about his volunteer service, he simply stated, “I just do what I can.”

“I’ve known Jim personally for years and was thrilled to receive a nomination spotlighting his hard work. I can tell you that every word is true and I am beyond excited that we are able to honor him in this way,” said John Gallagher, Darrell Waltrip Automotive general manager.

As a part of being a Darrell Waltrip Automotive Hometown Hero, a $500 donation will be made to Project Reflect. The organization fosters an elementary and middle school, as well after school programs to help provide education for children at high risk of school failure.  The money will be used toward a new science lab on the girl’s campus.

“The new campus for the girl’s school is in need of a science lab. We have decided that we will put that money towards the lab and making it state of the art for the girls. To get donations that create possibilities for their potential to be actualized is really special.”

Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Heroes is a monthly event honoring Middle Tennessee residents who have made a positive impact on their community. Nominate your hero at www.darrellwaltrip.com.
