Brentwood team loses chance at national berth, 1-0
Brentwood Home Page news reports Brentwood Soccer Club's U-17 Premier girls team barely finished second in the Division I Southern Regionals after defeating the defending national champions earlier in the tournament.
The team fell just short of a national tournament berth, falling 1-0 to NASA 12 Elite II of Georgia in the DI Region III tournament on Wednesday in Murfreesboro. The ball was deflected off a BWSC player for an own goal in the 80th minute.
Last week, in a Game to Watch designated by ESPN Rise, the 94 Girls Premier team defeated tourney favorite Solar 94 Red from Dallas 4-1 in their opener. The Dallas team features U.S. Soccer Youth National Team forward Taylor Smith.
The 94 Premier squad made the Southern Regionals by winning their third straight state title. They were the only Tennessee team to advance during the single elimination portion of this year's regionals, and the first girls' state team in the finals since 2002.
The Brentwood 94 team, coached by Christ Presbyterian coach Brandy Gagliano, reached the semifinals in 2010 and lost only to penalty kicks in a hard-fought game.
In this year's semifinals, Allison Kington scored a goal in the 82nd minute to beat United FA Elite of Georgia, 1-0.
Chesney White headed in a goal on an assist by Tori Hawkins and then hit a penalty kick in BWSC's 2-1 quarterfinal victory over the Lady Renegades of Florida.
Against the national champs from Dallas last Friday, BWSC's Ashlie Watson, Malinda Allen and Chesney White scored along with an own goal by Solar 94 Red.
Lindsey Mayo scored the lone goal in the Brentwood '94 Premier's 1-0 victory Saturday against 93 CASL Spartan Elite Black of North Carolina. The BWSC team lost in their final pool-play match on Sunday to CESA 93 Girls Premier of South Carolina, 2-1.
