FRANKLIN --Garret Bullock, 29, will spend at least three years in state custody for his actions that left a Brentwood mother paralyzed, a 9-year-old boy injured and extensive property damage following a DUI-related traffic accident on Sept. 13, 2010.

Bullock faced a maximum of 15 years in prison after pleading guilty in July to two counts of vehicular assault, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. He had a .13 reading on a blood alcohol test performed by Brentwood Police Department following the three-car accident near the intersection of Franklin Road and Murray Lane.

Williamson County Circuit Court Judge Robbie Beal presided during the almost three-hour hearing, which included testimony by both Don and Elaine Scholes. Elaine Scholes, 52, is now a quadriplegic and “a prisoner in my own body,”   she told the judge and the large crowd of supporters for both sides who attended the hearing.  Officer John Maxwell with the Brentwood Police Department who investigated the accident testified. Bullock also took the stand.

Beal sentenced Bullock to concurrent three-year terms for each of the felony counts. In a second misdemeanor, DUI-second offense charge Bullock also pled guilty to in July, Beal sentenced him to serve six months of an 11 months, 29 day term in the Williamson County Jail following his release from state custody.

Asst. District Attorney Kelly Lawrence had argued that the charges should be served consecutively. Bullock was represented by attorney Eric Davis.

Brentwood Home Page will have a complete report on the hearing later today. Click here to read Monday's profile on Elaine Scholes.

Sadly, our boozed-up culture is so protective of alcohol abuse that we protect the offender instead of the victim.

What ever laws need to be changed, we,the people need to speak NOW rather than let another drunk ruin the life and lives of others. He should have had the book thrown at him...and he WILL WALK again and Elaine will NEVER... PLEASE read the BHP article that tells of ALL the additional HEARTACHE this accident caused their family. WHERE DOES BULLOCK fit in that picture. The RIPPLE effect caused should have been loudly recognized as a part of his stupidity and lack of responsibility. JUSTICE WAS NOT even close to being served in this matter. SHAME SHAME SHAME on the Judge and/or the Law.

All of you need to get real. Mr bullocks jail time isn't going to make mrs scholes walk. You never get your vengeance and will live yor life with hate..... Isn't that sad? This is a terrible tragedy but good CAN come of it. Mr Bullock and Mrs Scholes could travel the country/world speaking TOGETHER on the dangers of drinking and driving. This could save countless lives. Do you really want to spend your lives full of hate? The laws the law and the verdicts the verdict. If you don't like it run for office or be a judge. Otherwise, shut up and try to make things better. Doesn't that sound like a better idea than calling names and questioning the law on a homePage probably 20 people read? Jeez. And speaking of Brentwood home Page, what's with the censorship?

You are correct Tony, that jail time isn't going to make Mrs. Scholes walk again. But maybe a longer prison sentence that would keep Mr. Bullock off the streets, could protect innocent lives. After all, he received a second DUI after the accident with Mrs. Scholes. You are incorrect about the Brentwood Home Page, however. It has almost 30,000 unique visitor every month, and is emailed to over 8,000 email addresses six days per week. And regarding censorship - they posted your ranting opinion didn't they?

Well said delilasue. It is obvious that Mr. Bullock has not learned from this tragedy. At least while he's locked up he can't hurt anyone else. Tony-I don't think people are full of hate, I simply think they want justice. Judge Beal could have, and should have, made the sentences consecutive and not concurrent. That requires no change in the law and was fully within his power. There is much confusion and bewilderment as to why, when drunk driving is so villified in our society, this judge chose a slap on the wrist over long-term protection of the public.

Wow, this IS a tragedy for EVERYONE. First, has anyone forgotten that Garret Bullock has a mother, a father and 2 younger sisters? Are they not suffering as well? Has anyone thought about the fact of anyone close to Garret, like a girlfriend or possibly a wife someday that might be a little distraught about all this as well? Or how about the fact that Garret himself has to live with what he has done to Mrs. Scholes for the rest of his life? It is absolutely awful what happened to her but an eye for an eye will not change her situation or bring justice to any case. I cannot believe that so many people are so willing to say things about someone when the only thing people know about Mr. Bullock is what this reporter is posting. Have any of you lived with Garret, gone anywhere with him in public or even had a simple conversation with him? I didn't think so. People are depressed, addicted and even psychotic but are still capable of driving a vehicle. He caused an accident, not deliberately scanning the road for his victims. How many of us have had something alcoholic to drink and got behind the wheel of a car at ANY point in our lives? How many of EVERYDAY PEOPLE cause accidents and hurt even kill people and didn't even drink anything? This accident could have happened to anyone by anyone at anytime. People fail to remember that drinking is NOT illegal and driving after you have been drinking is STILL NOT illegal. This just happens to be a very unfortunate act on Mr. Bullock's part where he was definitely in the wrong. Mrs. Scholes and her family will never be the same and I completely understand the community's concern for the safety of the city and area with Mr. Bullock being in jail, but who's to say how he gets help and whether or not he is worth saving? To say he hasn't learned his lesson is pretty shallow and degrading seeing as he's in jail right now for a mistake. An accident. He has an opportunity to change his life around and do good in this world, who are we to judge others when we could in his position in the blink of an eye? His alcoholism is treatable and he should be given an opportunity to seek help himself. I guarantee EVERYONE posting on this page knows someone or has a family member that is addicted to drugs or alcohol or depressed and really needs some type of psychological help. It is awful how people are so quick to judge others but fail to realize we are all humans with problems. I send my prayers to Mrs. Scholes, her husband, her daughters and the rest of the world that has been affected by this awful tragedy, but that doesn't mean taking away his life will change hers. OUR tax dollars pay for him to be in jail. I personally would rather him be out making better use of his time by paying his debts to this society and not soaking up "3 hots and a cot" at my expense. Honestly, if everyone could have their way, this world would be more of a mess than it already is. And I know if any of YOU drank and hit someone, I guarantee you would not wish for the max for yourself. As far as Judge Beal's ruling, he did what he did for a reason. Shaming the judge just goes to show the immature reality people in this world really live in.
