Brentwood Home Page news reports Ravenwood's swim teams head into today's regional meet in Nashville coming off combined and boys championships at the Williamson County meet and second-place finish for the girls.
Brentwood High was second in both combined (287-210) and boys team scores (169-100) in the county meet a week ago at the Indoor Sports Complex.
The Lady Raptors (118) and Lady Bruins (110) were 2-3 and in contention with county champ Franklin (121).
A strong class of super sophomore swimmers puts both RHS and BHS in contention for boys in the regional meet starting at noon at Centennial Sportsplex.
RHS sophomore Grant Stafford won two county events and anchored two winning relays, and classmate Alex Goss swam to two titles and was part of both relay victories.
"The ones to watch are the boys relays," said Ravenwood Coach Angela J. Curtiss. "They are strong this year."
The Lady Raptors are led by senior Kim Davis, who won two races in the county championships.
Last year Ravenwood won the combined team title and Brentwood was second at the Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association meet.
Brentwood Academy, which competes in the smaller Division II, was fifth in the Williamson County championships in combined totals and sixth in boys and girls team scoring.
Sophomores sizzle for RHS, BHS boys teams
The Ravenwood sophomore foursome of Ted Curtiss, Goss, Reece Boyd and Stafford won the county 200-yard medley relay, with Brentwood's Zach Driver, Robby Graves, Arthur Vidineyev and Harrison Turney second in 1:44.96. All those Bruins swimmers also are 10th-graders except Graves, a junior. BA was fifth with Matthew Keller, C.J. Wochomurka, Matthew Broadbent and Miller Brown.
RHS also won the 400 freestyle in 3:20.76 with Boyd, Curtiss, Goss and Stafford edging BHS (Turney, Driver, Vidineyev, Graves). BA was seventh, with Michael Fister, Gannick Griffin, Daniel Byers and Gage Adkins.
Stafford took the county title for Ravenwood in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.51 to Graves' second-place 1:43.19 for Brentwood. RHS also finished third and fifth with juniors James Moseley and Bink Baxter, and BHS sophomore Artem Pavlichenko was sixth.
Stafford won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.27, besting classmate Boyd. Brentwood's Driver and Vidineyev finished 3-4 ahead of fifth-place RHS sophomore James Lotshaw, and Bruins sophomore Andrew Hughes was eighth.
Goss was tops in the 100 breaststroke in 59.78 and senior teammate Zhaoqi Li placed third. Brentwood Academy's Wochomurka finished fourth, Bruins sophomore Seth Jackson sixth and BA's Brown seventh.
Goss won the boys 200 individual medley in 2:02.59, while Vidienyev was third for the Bruins. RHS also had fifth with sophomore Bailey Best.
Curtiss, another sophomore, swam to the 100-yard backstroke title in 55.43 over runner-up Driver of BHS. Lotshaw was fifth for the Raptors, and Keller eighth for the Eagles.
Boyd, the Raptors' other top 10th-grader, placed second in the 50 free, senior Paul Rowland took third and Li was eighth. Turney was fourth for BHS.
Ravenwood was also runner-up in the boys 200 freestyle relay (Rowland, Li, junior Will Carlson and Best, 1:35.12). BA was fourth (Keller, Broadbent, Brown and Wochomurka), and BHS was fifth (junior Sam Hughes, Andrew Hughes, Pavlichenko and junior Preston Camp).
For the Bruins, Graves won the 500-yard free distance race in 4:59.49 in a close finish, just .42 of a second ahead of the Raptors' Moseley. Pavlichenko placed fourth for BHS, and Baxter finished seventh for RHS.
Brentwood's Turney finished second in the 100-yard free by just .29 of a second. Ravenwood's Curtiss, Rowland and Best were 3-4-5, and BA's Brown was sixth.
Lady Raptors, Lady Bruins 2-3 in county
Ravenwood's Davis captured the county title in the girls 200 IM in 2:14.01 Lady Raptors senior Regan Page was fifth and sophomore Michaela Kent seventh, bracketing BHS junior Karla Leutzow in sixth.
Davis also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.71, and junior teammate Taylor Piranian was 8th. BHS took third with junior Allison Maher and 6th-7th with freshman Becca Sinard and junior Grace Wholley.
Additionally, Davis anchored the runner-up relay in the 400-yard freestyle (3:52.38) with freshman Bailey Page, junior Tracey Kenmuir and freshman Hannah Cressman. Brentwood was fourth with freshmen Sarah Catherine Hurlock and Carissa Waller, Sinard and Wholley, and Brentwood Academy finished sixth (Hayden McKay, Abby Chapman, Ashley Nelson, Jordan Gottschalk).
Bailey Page won the 500-yard free in 5:16.13, with Waller, Leutzow, and junior Allison O'Neill finishing 4-5-6 for the Bruins.
Bailey Page also took second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.57 for RHS, and Wholley was third for BHS. Ravenwood also had Cressman in fourth and Kenmuir fifth, and the Brentwood's O'Neill was sixth.
Emma Morris, an RHS junior, was second only .36 of a second behind Franklin senior Christina Bechtel in the 100-yard backstroke, in 1:02.56. Teammate Kent placed third, senior Tennille Kent was seventh and Kenmuir eighth, while BHS freshman Sara Staats was sixth.
Morris also was runner-up in 100-yard free, and while Maher placed fourth for the Lady Bruins. The Raptors also had sixth and seventh with Regan Page and freshman Claire Jeffries, and BHS took eighth with Hurlock.
The Lady Raptors were runner-up in the 200-yard medley relay by .38 of a second to Franklin (Morris, Piarnian, Cressman, Bailey Page) in 1:53.79.
Lady Bruins sophomore Logan Klinsky won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.01 seconds over Bechtel, and BHS also had the sixth-place finisher in Hurlock. RHS junior Danielle Dauchot was fifth and senior Kathryn Campbell was eighth.
Bruins junior Rachel Kaegi took second place in the 100-yard butterfly, followed by teammates Klinsky and Waller. Cressman and Piranian were fifth and sixth for the Lady Raptors.
Brentwood was runner-up in the girls' 200-yard freestyle relay, with Kaegi, Staats, Maher and Klinsky. Brentwood Academy's Rachel Dale, Ellie Lee, Sarah Jordan Priest and Caroline Lee were fourth.
BHS was third in the 200 medley relay (Staats, Allison Maher, Kaegi, Klinsky).BA was sixth (McKay, Chapman, Dale, Lee).
