The once-beaten Brentwood and the Ravenwood boys lacrosse teams are both coming off a pair of big victories heading into tonight’s Battle of the Woods at 7 p.m. at BHS.

The Bruins (8-1) traveled to Memphis on Saturday for an important conference game against cross state rival Christian Brothers and prevailed 9-8. The winner of the game most likely will get a favorable seed in the state playoff tournament given the remaining conference games, while the loser faces a more difficult path to the championship in early May.

On Wednesday last week, Brentwood also bested Pope John Paul II 13-8 in a game at Crockett Park.

The RHS Raptors (8-5) won against two visiting out-of-state teams, DuPont Manual (Ky.) 10-5 on Sunday and Noblesville (Ind.) 13-4 on Saturday, during a three-game stretch. Ravenwood dropped a conference game on Friday, 15-6 against defending state Division I champion McCallie.

Here are highlights of last week’s BHS games:

Brentwood 9, Christian Brothers 8: Brentwood got out to an early 3-0 lead on two goals by Garrett Hargis, one at even strength and one “man up.” Sam Wyatt scored unassisted for the other.

CBHS snuck one in at 15 seconds to go in the quarter to cut the lead to 3-1. The Bruins stretched it out to 4-1 before the Purple Wave scored twice to make it 4-3. Wyatt answered CBHS by scoring twice, “man up” and unassisted, to make it a 6-3 game at the half.

In the third quarter, the Wave answered again with an early goal and cut the lead to two goals. The Bruins were struggling at the face off X, but were creating turnovers and clearing the ball well to the offensive end. As the third quarter progressed, the Bruins controlled the game by scoring three more and pushing the lead out to four goals at 9-5 to end the third.

The Bruins took a flurry of penalties early in the fourth and suddenly found themselves in a tight game, as Christian Brothers took advantage with two “man up” goals and cut the lead to 9-7. The Bruins struggled to get quality shots in the fourth and seemed to be playing a lot of defense as the Brothers’ continued to win at the face off X.

With the game winding down and seemingly in hand, the Bruins allowed one more goal with 28 seconds to go, and made Brentwood Coach Chuck Catterton a little nervous. The Bruins were able to close it out, but the score was closer than the game itself. The Bruins may have relaxed a little once they got up 9-5, and were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Ross English had 15 saves in the win.

BHS scoring: Wyatt 4 goals, 1 assist; Hargis 2g; Connor Hart 1g,1a; Akbari and Richardson 1g each; Rittler, Manning, Burnett  1a each.

Brentwood 13, John Paul II 8:  JPII, which like BHS brought a 6-1 record into the game, jumped out to a surprising 3-0 lead, and although Brentwood responded, JPII still led at the end of the first quarter 4-3.

In spite of the Knights winning 16 of the 25 face offs, the Bruins defense was able to create enough turnovers to get the ball back to the offense. Defenseman Colin Hart personally converted three Knights’ turnovers to Bruin scores. Overall, Brentwood outscored the Knights 8-2 over the next two quarters, and led going into the fourth quarter 11-6.

The Bruins took advantage of three JPII penalties in the third and fourth quarters and scored three of their last five goals on “man up” situations. The Knights were not able to convert on any of the five Bruin penalties.

BHS scoring: Wyatt 2 goals, 2 assists; Colin Hart 2g,1a; Manning and Gill 2g each;  Connor Hart 1g, 1a; Akbari , Richardson, Burnett, Springer  1g each;  Wudel and Plisco 1a each.
