Brentwood Home Page news reports Brentwood junior Jake Lazas and sophomore Eric Hoff both qualified for the state decathlon competition, while Lady Bruins junior Holly van Grinsven made the state pentathlon field.

Lazas, whose brother Kevin won the state decathlon the past two years, won the Section 3 qualifying at BHS on Monday-Tuesday with 6,638 points to runner-up Hoff’s 6,408. Ravenwood Zach Gilroy was sixth with 5,372.
Van Grinsven won the girls’ multi-event with 3,209 points. Ashley Wengerter of Independence took the second qualifying spot with 2,679, with BHS senior Kelly Bickel missing out with 2,518 points in third place.
The Class AAA state decathlon-pentathlon will take place on Monday-Tuesday during the TSSAA’s Spring Fling championships in Murfreesboro the last full week of May.
Lazas and Hoff were 1-2 in the triple jump at 42-11.75 and 41-08, respectively, and also the shot put at 42-9 and 42-3.25. Gilroy had the third-best shot of 40-9.5.
Lazas tied for the best time in the 100 meters (11.39) at the sectional for 776 points, and Hoff was sixth. Lazas’ high jump was also tops, clearing 6-2 while Gilroy was second-best at 6-foot and Hoff had the third-place mark of 5-10.

In the long jump, Lazas’ second-place leap (12-11.75) was good enough to add 743 points. Hoff had the fourth-best distance.
A discus toss of 112-09 gave Lazas the runner-up spot, with Hoff in fifth at 108-7 and Gilroy seventh at 107-2.
In the final event, Lazas ran the 1,500 meters in second place (4:39.67) for 682 points. Hoff placed fourth, and Gilroy fifth.
In the 400 meters, Lazas picked up 708 points with his third place (52.38), while Hoff finished fifth.
Hoff had the quickest 110-meter hurdles (15.13 seconds) for 834 points, and Lazas was fourth. The Bruins sophomore also won the pole vault at 13-5.75, with both Lazas and Gilroy next at 12-6.
In the girls pentathlon, Van Grinsven won the 100-meter hurdles (15.04 seconds) over runner-up Bickel for 836 points and the long jump (16-10.50) for 598. She tied for fifth in the high jump at 4-07.75.
The BHS junior also had the second-best throw (29-08.25) in the shot put.
Van Grinsven took second in the 800 run, while Bickel was third. Ravenwood sophomore Peyton Reynolds and senior Anna McGuiness were fourth and fifth.
