When you step into Brentwood Tailor Shop, you are transported from a suburban Brentwood strip mall to a quaint English village shop. Proprietor David Cheatham even fits the bill of English tailor, he lacks only the accent.

The big paned windows beckon you in, and David’s as likely to ask you to sit down and visit as he is to take your measurements or help you hand-pick the perfect necktie.

Brentwood Tailor Shop offers custom- and ready-made clothes and shoes for gentlemen and complete alteration services for everyone.  And from now until Christmas, David is offering 40% off in stock shirts.

David hung his shingle in 1991 and the shop has aged as gracefully as its owner. Staff members Debbie, Pat and Birdie have more than 80 years of sewing experience between them.

Why should someone consider a custom-made suit, shirt or other garment? “Quality and fit, of course. We have some of the best fabrics in the world and we deal in quarter inches,” he said.

 
Though his customers include pro athletes and leaders in the music, healthcare and publishing fields, David’s quick to point out that his ready-to-wear lines are comparable to those found in department stores – but come with the individual customer service a shop like his can provide.

More than half of Brentwood Tailor Shop’s business is alterations, and his experienced staff can work on any fabric, from leather to the most delicate formalwear.

As for fashion trends today, David said the AMC television show Mad Men “is the current dictator of fashion.” If he were to recommend one piece for a gentleman this fall, it would be a “powerful navy or charcoal suit with side vents.”

“It’s always in style.”
