The Battle of the Woods, the annual gridiron showdown between Brentwood High and cross-town rival Ravenwood, played out Friday night at Brentwood’s stadium. The Bruins won back the Wooden Trophy, winning the game 35-7.
The Bruins started off the first quarter aggressively as senior Jordan Evans scored his first of four touchdowns scampering in from 15 yards off right tackle.
The second quarter saw Evans in the end zone again with a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Clay Weber. Brentwood completed 100 % of it’s passes with Clay Weber going 7 for 7, 90 yards & a TD. At halftime, the score was 14-0.
Coach Ron Crawford was happy to see those points on the scoreboard. “We played better early. We hadn’t scored in the first quarter all year,” he said.
The Bruins scored every quarter, with one touchdown each for the first three quarters topped off with two in the fourth. Following some great forward movement from Jeremy Coffey’s rushes, Evans again scored in the third quarter with a five-yard TD run up the middle.
“The defense’s intensity was good,” Crawford said. “Offense was not as focused. But we definitely improved over last week.”
For Ravenwood, defensive tackle Theo Egbujor was a standout. He had 13 tackles for the night and one sack. RHS quarterback Alex Williams threw 50 percent with 12 of 24 completions for 147 yards. Williams had moments of brilliance with beautiful completed passes, but turned the ball over to the Bruins with two interceptions.
Tony Rowland scored the Raptor’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 43-yard touchdown run up the middle. Rowland had 10 carries for 64 yards with one fumble.
RHS’ Ryan Fitzpatrick had three receptions for 45 yards and Andrew Cash had two for 22 yards.
The Bruins’ running back, Jeremy Coffey, scored his first touchdown in the fourth quarter, with a 33-yard TD run around the outside. But it was Evans night. His final score was a two-yard carry up the middle. Evans didn’t stop there, but contributed to defense by breaking up two passes and one interception.
Brentwood’s defensive was lead by Josh Killet who had one sack, one forced fumble, and one sack. The Bruins had three additional sacks from Tristan Dodds, Chris Hoop and Nick Coffey. Jacob Norfleet was credited with a fumble recovery.
In addition to five points after touchdown, Brentwood’s kicker Brian Davis had five kickoffs that were touchbacks. “Davis is running about 90 percent right now," Crawford said. “This is a huge advantage in high school.”
The Bruins dominated the time of possession 34:36 to 13:24.
The Bruins also saw the return of senior twin brothers, Gabe and Josh Wilson, to the playing field. Gabe, guard and linebacker, had been sidelined with a knee injury while Josh, tackle and defensive tackle, was recovering from mono. The brothers have been frustrated spending their final high school season on the sidelines. Tonight, they were pulling for each other on the sidelines and on the field.
“I got to play 3-4 series,” Josh Wilson said. “It felt good after sitting out six weeks. But it was great to give Gabe a high chest win he first came off the field.”
The Battle of the Woods trophy will spend the next year at Brentwood High School. Despite the rivalry, sportsmanship was evident during and after the game. Click Here for stats of the game.
