Brentwood Home Page news reports
Brentwood resident Jack L. Wood, chairman emeritus of architecture and engineering firm Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc., was honored by the Nashville Downtown Partnership as its 2011 Volunteer of the Year.

More than 900 people attended the Sept. 28 awards presentation at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel that featured guest speakers Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Metro-Nashville Major Karl Dean.

“I have considered it a privilege to have served on the Nashville Downtown Partnership board during a period of exciting growth as downtown developed into a vibrant place to live, work and play," Wood said.  "BWSC has been located in the central business district since the firm was founded in 1956 and its headquarters is still in the downtown business district. It has been a pleasure for our firm and our employees to see the emergence of a great downtown.”

Wood, who served as chief executive officer of BWSC from 1989 to 2002, was board chairman of the Nashville Downtown Partnership in 1998. In 2002, he played a key role in developing a successful public-private partnership between Metro Government and the Downtown Partnership for the management of Metro parking facilities and expanding the LP Field parking option.

He encouraged the Partnership to undertake this bold new venture and has remained a strong advocate for the parking and shuttle programs. Wood continues to serve as chairman of the Access and Transportation Committee of the Downtown Partnership.

“Jack Wood has demonstrated continuous dedication and loyalty while providing superior services to downtown and to the Nashville Downtown Partnership,” said Tom Turner, President and CEO of the Downtown Partnership, who presented the award to Wood.  “He has made a real difference.  It is important that we acknowledge his contributions and leadership.”

During the awards program, Wood was also cited for his service as an outstanding board member at the Adventure Science Center, where Jack Wood Hall is a meeting and banquet room with a panoramic view of downtown Nashville.  It was noted that at BWSC, the Jack L. Wood Excellence in Service Award is presented annually to an employee who demonstrates continuous dedication and loyalty while providing superior services.

Wood and his wife Delores are residents of Williamson County.

Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon, Inc. is an employee-owned engineering, architecture, planning, landscape architecture, and surveying firm.
