The Brentwood Middle School swim team returned from the Tennessee Middle School Championship meet in Chattanooga with the combined state championship.

The girls team also finished runner-up to Girls Preparatory School and ahead of host Baylor, while the boys finished eighth. When both teams scores were combined, BMS captured the overall title with Sevier County and Harding Academy finishing second and third, respectively.

"It was a long day of swimming for many of our swimmers who came back at night to swim in the finals but it all paid off in the end," said swim coach Shantel Perry, of the Maryland Farms YMCA.

"There were some super exciting swim and finishes at finals that really set off fireworks at the aquatic center."

Jessica Wingo had two runner-up finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle races and also swam on the second-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Emily Hughes placed second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 butterfly, plus also competed on both the runner-up relays.

Nicholas Osteen was second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free, while Spencer Klinsky finished third in the butterfly and fifth in the 200 individual medley. Klinsky led off and Osteen anchored  the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay.

Several of the swimmers now are training for Southeasterns and district meets.
