Brentwood Home Page news reports The Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department has been recognized as one of the state’s top ten fundraisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in 2010.
In only its second year of participation, Brentwood’s contribution of over $7,000 fell just below that of much larger departments such as Memphis and Chattanooga.
Brentwood finished seventh among all participating departments last year after being recognized as MDA’s “Rookie of the Year” in 2009 for being the highest contributing department among first-time participants.
The total raised among all departments in Tennessee was $263,272. The Fill the Boot campaign, in which firefighters stand on street corners and in parking lots collecting donations in fire boots, has been a primary fundraiser for MDA since 1954. Since that time, fire departments across the nation have raised in excess of $300 million for “Jerry’s Kids.”
“We as a department realize that this is not a reflection upon us as much as it is on the charitable nature of the Brentwood community as a whole,” Assistant Chief Brian Goss said. “We are extremely grateful for the funding that the citizens of Brentwood so graciously provide to the fire and rescue department through their tax dollars and therefore are very selective of the charities that we ask you to support.
“In fact, Fill the Boot is the only monetary fundraising activity that your firefighters participate in on an annual basis.
MDA uses this funding for research, patient and family support, physical and respiratory therapy, summer camps, and various other methods of treatment for a variety of myopathies and neuromuscular diseases.
