Board honors students, staff; extends Looney contract

The Williamson County Board of Education extended Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney's contract and also continued its tradition of honoring students and staff during its monthly meeting at the Williamson County Administration Complex.

Looney received a two-year extension by the board on Monday night. His contract now goes through June 15, 2015.

Students and staff honored by the board were:

Woodland Middle School student Gene Li earned first place in the National Math Counts competition and first place in the Tennessee Middle School Math Competition with a perfect score of 100. His teacher and math coach is Linda Conrad.

Brentwood High students won several TSSAA AAA state track championships including: Holly Van Grinsven (400 meters); Jake Lazas (decathlon); and Steve Wade (shot put).  The entire Brentwood High boys team also won the TSSAA AAA state title. Members include Wade, Lazas, Eric Hoff, Patrick Kellett, Alec Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Nathan Thomas, Andrew Wilson, Paul Stuart, Ty Osman, Will Grooms, Taylor Cardwell, Paul Hunt, Nick Coffee, Nick Contioni, Logan Duks, Isaac Martinez, Austin Sanders, Christian Cardwell, Scotty Wild, Sam O’Rouke, Sam Hughes, Owen Leaman and Tilghman Kazmierowicz. Their coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.

From Page High, Taylor McCord won the TSSAA A-AA track state championship for discus. His coach is Peter Wade.            

In tennis, Ravenwood High’s Sean Karl won the TSSAA AAA boys singles championship for the second consecutive year, while Ravenwood’s Lauren Caballero and Iris Hao won the girls doubles (the second time for Caballero). The Ravenwood girls team also earned the AAA state title. Team members include  Mallory Lane, Amanda Oldani, Caballero, Jacqueline Curtsinger, Kelly Rains, Blakely Riddle, Madison Stankevich, Elizabeth Stubblefield, Marissa Behlmaier, Hannah Scoener, Kayla Anthony, Caroline Morelli, Iris Hao, Vivian Hao, Taylor Briggs, Tinsley Hastings. The coach is Brad Herrera.

The Ravenwood girls rugby team also earned a state championship. Team members include Ebony Freeman, Michelle Egbujor, Mary Rogers, Holly Flatt, Olivia Donahue, Shelby Timmons, Shelby English, Breanne Hojer, Moonbeam Wachuku, Ashley McFarland, Maryam Kabir, Amanda Vickers, Kristin Tuttle, Jillian Weller, Allie Dickey, Kenya Freeman, Nneka Nwosisi, Anna Darbashi, Hayley Clark, Dianne Pamplona, Juli Hindman, Caitlin Boone, Ashley Smith, Judy Lomax, Casey Rasmussen and Morgan Rasmussen.  Their coach is Terry King.

Two staff members were recognized by the board.  Recruitment Coordinator Eugene Wade was honored by the Brentwood Early Risers Toastmasters as the Communicator of the Year. Franklin High’s Mitzi Terry received second place in the Outstanding Teacher of American History State Competition of the DAR.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Looney called on Belinda Moss who presented a 21st Century Skills Assessment Review.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Pat Anderson reminded board members that ribbon cuttings for Clovercroft Elementary and Summit High would be held on Sunday, Aug. 7.

In New Business, the Board:

* Approved five policies on first reading including School Attendance Areas, Zoning and Non-Resident Students, Service Animals, Interscholastic Athletics, Evaluation, Health Examinations (deleted).

* Approved three 2010-2011 Intra-Category Budget Amendments to the General Purpose School Fund, Central Cafeteria Fund and Extended School Program Fund.

* Took no action on a request for a Board Hearing.

* Approved the Superintendent’s Notice of Charges Against Tenured Teacher.

* Approved Power Mondays at all high schools for 2011-2012.

In other action, the Board:

* Approved the Perkins IV Reserve Grant.

* Approved 2010-2011 School Activity Fund open purchase orders.

* Approved the SRO 2011-2012 Memorandum of Understanding.

* Approved 2011-2012 Designated Management Personnel.

* Approved construction of Chapman’s Retreat playground shade structure.

* Approved the purchase and mounting of Edmondson Elementary sound equipment.

* Approved the construction of a Grassland Middle football field fence.

* Approved the construction of a Kenrose Elementary K-2 playground shade structure.

* Approved the construction of a Nolensville Elementary shade structure/outdoor classroom.

* Approved construction of an Oak View Elementary basketball court fence.

* Approved construction of Pearre Creek Elementary playground enhancements.

* Approved a Pearson Contract for FTTT Grant Project.

* Approved recommended field trip fee requests.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education will be at 6:30 p.m., Monday, July 18, in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
