The fourth annual Run for Rotary went off without a hitch Saturday morning – until it came time to announce the winners. A rush of race-day entrants combined with a new timing system caused a delay in giving out the trophies as results for the 5k and 10k races were verified.

But even that couldn't damper the enthusiasm exhibited by both members of the sponsoring Brentwood Rotary Club and the racers themselves, who numbered around 350 and ranged in age from babies (in strollers, of course) to one in his 70s.

A few runners showed up at the Brentwood High School football field and track before dawn said Rotarian Ann Hollis, who was helping with registration. "It was 'Saturday Morning Lights' instead of Friday Night Lights," she said.

Rafal Nazarewicz was the first runner to cross the finish line, winning the 5K in 18:48. It was the Polish native's second road race in Middle Tennessee since recently moving here to join the faculty at Vanderbilt University.

Ryan Dennison came in second in the men's 5K, with a time of 20.22. Abraham Cervantes was third with 20.36.

Two middle schoolers were the first women across the finish line. Friends Jaime Blaylock and Morgan Whitson were one and two in the 5K with times of 22:38 and 22:59 respectively. Jaime runs cross country for Sunset Middle School while Morgan does the same for Ensworth Middle. Ten-year-old Emily Anderson followed in third, with a 24.03 time.

In the 10K, Kenny Lane was the winner, coming in at 37.34. Bob Buchholz was second at 38:05 and Chris Duncan crossed the line 30 seconds later for a third-place finish.

In the female division, Lane Newton Summers outpaced the rest of the field with a 45:52 time. Mary Marshall followed at 46:03, with Misty Leopper coming in at third, 49:29. was the first female

This was the first Run for Rotary held in the fall. Previous runs were held on the same day as the club's annual Pancake Breakfast.

"Having the run as its own event works very much in its favor," club president Michael Hindman said as he surveyed the crowd. "And, of course, it's a magnificent day.

"The goal is to get 1000 runners some day and we're well on our way."

Brentwood Home Page, ShredX and My Office Products and the Rotary  ponsored a free community Shred Day in conjunction with the run. Jim Tisony of ShredX reports that approximately 4,000 pounds of paper was shredded on Saturday.
