Students, parents, staff wave goodbye to summer Brentwood Home Page staff reports Williamson County schools opened their doors across the city Thursday. Though students only had a half day to find their classrooms, meet their teachers and, yes, bring home all those forms that must be filled out, the day inside the walls went without any major drama, according to local school officials. The drama comes next week, when kindergarten starts on Aug. 22.
Williamson County Sheriff’s department, which staffs crossing guards, reported that traffic was heavy around all campuses countywide Thursday.
“It’s a nightmare everywhere and it’s going to be like that for the first week or so,” said Deputy Sheriff Dusty Rhodes. He attributed the log jams to parents who dropped their kids off and picked them up instead of having them ride the bus on the first day.
In Brentwood, "We experienced heavy traffic in all of the school zones this morning. We had one minor crash reported on Crockett Road near Volunteer Parkway at approximately 8:25 am. There were no injuries and no pedestrians were involved," Capt. Tommy Walsh of the Brentwood Police Department told BHP. "Our officers issued a number of warnings in the school zones to educate motorists about the 15 mile per hour speed limit."
Several schools had larger than projected enrollments but Carol Birdsong, WCS spokesperson, said late Thursday that those figures were not yet available.
