Bruins, Raptors capture two medals apiece in DI; Eagles earn nine in DII

Brentwood Academy sophomore Amos Mason won the 215-pound state wrestling title in TSSAA Division II on Saturday night at the Ag Expo in Franklin.

Mason, who took third at 189 last season, notched an 8-4 decision over Baylor senior John Mackey, the heavyweight champ last year and 215 runner-up the season before.

Eagles junior Danny Maloney (119) placed second in the tournament after suffering a 10-1 major decision defeat to Baylor sophomore Brandon Brunner, also a state champ last year at 103.

BA seniors Carlos Calloway (130) and Jack Wilson (135) both took home third-place medals, as the Eagles earned nine in all. Calloway and fourth-place Zeno Dupree (140) each finished as four-time state medalists in their careers.

Brentwood junior Nick Coffey (215) and sophomore Gabe Hamilton (135) both captured fifth-place medals after reaching Friday's semifinals.

Ravenwood junior Kyle Keunhold (112) fought his way through the consolation rounds to a sixth-place medal. Raptors sophomore Jacob Freeman (119) also settled for sixth due to injury.

2 Bruins finish fifth, 2 Raptors take sixth

In Division I, Bruins' Coffey pinned Ooltewah junior Jay Rudwall in the fifth-place bout, while Hamilton won his medal match by default.

Both were semifinalists in the championship bracket, but lost in the consolation semis.

The Raptors' Freeman, who fell short of a finals berth 4-3 in overtime Friday's semis, had to forfeit his two consolation matches Saturday. Freeman's sixth-place medal gives him two in his young career after finishing third in state last year.

Keunhold won four consolation matches to make the consolation semis after going 1-1 in the championship bracket. He lost to two-time medalist Kendall Kermick of Germantown in the consolation semis, then fell to last year's 103-pound runner-up, Austin Oliver of Cleveland, in the fifth-place match.

Eagles 8th-grader wins consolation semifinal

In Division II, Maloney's runner-up medal is his second, following a sixth-place finish in the weight class in 2010.

Calloway grabbed third place by with a pin at 3:28 of McCallie junior Tim Westbrooks, the 119 runner-up. Calloway was also third at 112 last year, a finalist at 103 in 2009, and fourth at 103 in '08.

Wilson also won his third-place match, 5-4 over Father Ryan senior Chris Campbell.

Dupree won by pin in 36 seconds in the consolation final before a 4-3 loss gave him a fourth-place finish. Dupree was also third at 140, fifth at 135 and fourth at 112 in previous seasons.

BA junior Woody Baron, a Mr. Football finalist, won his second straight medal in the heavyweight division with a fourth place. He scored a 3-2 decision in the consolation semi, then was pinned by last year's 285-pound runner-up, Dylan Maxwell of Briarcrest.

Eighth-grader Justin Becci (103) also won a fourth-place medal.

Junior Seth Sirgo (125) won his fifth-place match on a decision, while another BA eighth-grader Christian DiLucchio (112) was sixth.
