All's 'Fair' in line dancing competition, or is it?
All's 'Fair' in line dancing competition, or is it? | BrentWord, Brentwood Home Page, Susan Leathers, brentwood tn news, Brentwood City Commission

It’s a conspiracy I say. We all know Williamson County residents who don’t live in Brentwood are jealous of those of us who do. So after the Boot, Scoot and Boogey Line dancing competition that kicked off the Williamson County Fair on Friday was over, I wasn’t surprised to learn that Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson and Franklin Mayor Ken Moore had received the most applause, which led to a tie for first place.

Yep, leave it up to Anderson to bring his beautiful granddaughter Molly on stage with him to unduly influence the voting. And how about those outfits he and Moore wore – full cowboy regalia complete with chaps. Someone who wants something obviously sent those over to their offices in a brown-paper box.

Anderson didn’t stop there. He had an original Gene Autry cap gun and “a belt buckle as big as a Chevy,” a source who shall remain anonymous tells me.

It’s fixed, I say, fixed. Just like previous years’ pig races and last year’s pig toss.

For Brentwood Mayor Paul Webb’s part, “My coaching did pay off” he said of the line-dancing lessons he quietly had completed over the past few weeks. He did do his city proud.

“Many of the Brentwood residents thought I had the best dance moves but the audience decided that Mayor Alexander of Nolensville and I were just not as up to boot scootin’ as the other two mayors,” our humble leader said when it was over.

Among those cheering him on were Lynn Tucker and Betsy Crossley.

“We particularly liked Paul’s little kick, and his lasso-throwing technique; he was a little shaky on the turns, but his performance overall was first class!,” says Lynn, the woman behind Leadership Brentwood for which Webb is a graduate.

Betsy, a ccty Commissioner and former mayor, knows first-hand how sneaky the competition can be, as she was robbed in both the 2009 Mayoral Pig Race competition and again in last year's Pig Toss.

“Several of us in the audience believed Paul had the best technique,” she shares. “He showed some great 'mayoral moves.' In fact, the Wildhorse Saloon invited him to come downtown and visit them in person.”

I don’t think he should quit his day job – or night one – to become a professional line dancer, however.

The mayor and his bride Pat did spend the day Saturday volunteering at the fair and he said they had a grand time doing it.

I’m calling for a full investigation. And next year I think the fair should plan a REAL competition. The bumper cars or shooting gallery would be good places to start!

And then there were 13
Here’s a little more fair news to know and share: the count is now up to 13 of the new little piglets born to resident mother sow Annie in the Williamson Farmers Co-op Children's Barnyard. On Saturday, a press release said Annie had given birth to 6 piglets. Late Sunday that number was amended to a lucky 13.

If you’re at the fair, go by and say hi to her and her new family.

Seriously, I encourage everyone to leave the bubble this week to head down to the fair. We’ll be reporting on it all week, and hope to make a few visits ourselves. The weather forecast calls for temperatures that should be downright pleasant after the past few weeks.

There’s plenty for everyone to do, inside and outside. Personally, I love to eat my way through a fair – funnel cakes, candy apples, corn dogs and the like – but since I have to get into a special dress for an October wedding, I’ll try to control myself this year.

I have no doubt I can keep myself busy without opening my mouth -- except perhaps when I get on the ION --  a contraption that spins its passengers at 26 revolutions per minute -- at a 45 degree angle. No doubt the screams will be mine.

See you there!
