7 BA, BHS, RHS wrestlers go for state finals

Brentwood High wrestlers Gabe Hamilton and Nick Coffey and Ravenwood's Jacob Freeman moved into Friday night's Division I semifinals of the TSSAA state individual tournament at the Williamson County Ag Expo in Franklin.

In Division II, Brentwood Academy junior Danny Maloney (119), with pins in the first two rounds, joined senior Carlos Calloway, senior Zeno Dupree and sophomore Amos Mason in making the semifinals.

Friday: 7 p.m., DI & II semifinals; DI 4th & 5th rounds of consolations; DII 3rd round of consolations.

Saturday: 10 a.m., DI & II consolation semifinals; matches for third-fourth & fifth-sixth places. 6 p.m., DI & II  finals, after 5:30 p.m. parade of champions

Hamilton, regional champion at 135, will challenge defending 130-pound state champion Marvin Lopez, a senior from Cleveland, for a spot in Saturday night's championship match. The Bruins sophomore earned a 13-2 major decision in the quarterfinals against Science Hill senior Javier Tapia. 

At 215 Coffey, a BHS football standout, will go up Bradley Central senior Tucker Bolton, last year's runner-up in the weight class. The Brentwood junior also recorded a major decision in his quarterfinal, 14-5 over Rossview senior Tyler Todd.

Ravenwood 10th-grader Freeman, third place at 112 as a freshman, faces last year's runner-up, Notre Dame junior Jack Boone, in the 119-pound semifinals. Freeman scored a 12-4 decision over Arlington senior Chandler Duncan in Friday morning's quarterfinals.

The Raptors' other quarterfinalist, heavyweight Dylan Yeager, was pinned by Riverdale junior Alex Woods and drops into Friday night's fourth round of consolations.

In Division II, Maloney, sixth last year, meets Pierce Olson of BGA. Calloway (130), third at 112 last year, advanced against junior Cole Mosley of Father Ryan, last year's 112 runner-up.

Dupree, who placed third in the same 140 weight class last year, will take on defending 140-pound champ Stuart Doster, a Baylor senior. Mason, third at 189 in 2010, competes against Father Ryan junior Rickey Fisher, who was runner-up in the same 215 division last season.

5 more Raptors, 6 other Eagles stay alive in consolations

In Friday's daytime consolation action, Raptors senior Michael Gray (140) and juniors Kyle Kuehnhold (112), junior Grant Jones (152) and Jonathon Mabry (160) each won two matches to advance. Kuehnhold, Gray, Jones, Mabry and Yeager can still earn medals if they win again in Friday night's fourth and fifth rounds.

Jones pinned both his opponents, while Kuenhold  earned a 15-3 major decision and won by pin. Mabry had a pin and a decision, while Gray scored two decisions.

RHS senior Cody Stewart (189) won by pin in his consolation second-round match and sophomore Tanner Reynolds (135) got a decision, but both dropped third-rounders.

Brentwood's Powell Newbern (130) won a major decision in the second round of consolations, over Northwest junior Jeff Baker. But Newbern lost his next match to 2009 state medalist Grayson Mullin of Notre Dame.

In Division II, BA eighth-grader Christian DiLucchio (112) and juniors Seth Sirgo (125), Connor Stone (171) and Woody Baron (285) all won openers in the Round of 16 and then won second-round consolations. Eagles eighth-grader Justin Becci (103) won two losers' bracket matches, and senior Jack Wilson (135) had a second-round pin to also make Friday night's consolation third round .

BA senior Isaac Ellison (152) and junior Towler McClellan (160) opened with first-round victories in the championship round, but suffered double-elimination in their next two bouts.

Championship semifinal losers will compete in consolation semifinals Saturday, followed by third-sixth place matches.
