More than 300 participants participated in the inaugural VACO Brentwood Kids Triathlon swim-bike-run event at Maryland Farms YMCA last weekend.

Competitors ages 5-15 came from Alabama and Kentucky as well as several local cities and as far away as Germantown and Signal Mountain in Tennessee.

The Brentwood Endurance Athletic Team helped host the event, which was Team Magic's first stand-alone youth multisport event. There were 316 kids participating and 75-plus volunteers in lime green race shirts.

Competitors swam in the YMCA's 50-meter pool, then biked and ran on closed-out, mostly flat courses.

A storm blew in just after the last finisher and forced the award ceremonies inside to a racquetball court in age-group shifts.

Purity gave away free ice cream and chocolate milk to participants, and Publix donated healthy snacks.

Every finisher received a cool finisher "dog tag" award, and early registrants received technical T-shirts. Awards and gift cards were given to the top three boys and girls in each age group, and other goodies were awarded by raffle.

RB's Cyclery even gave away a $300 kids bike and helmet to a lucky recipient.

The race was the second in a four-race YMCA kids triathlon series.
