Brentwood and Ravenwood each advanced two wrestlers into Friday morning’s quarterfinals of the TSSAA state individual tournament at the Williamson County Ag Expo in Franklin.

BHS sophomore Gabe Hamilton, the regional champ at 135, and junior 215-pounder Nicholas Coffey pinned both of their opponents in Thursday’s matches.

Hamilton pinned Beech's Zach Pickney and East Hamilton eighth-grader Sean Hubbs at the same exact mark in his two matches – 2:52. Coffey scored his second-round pin at 0:45 over Bartlett senior Trey Green after recording a fall over Collierville senior David Hammons at 2:16 in the opener.

RHS sophomore Jacob Freeman (119), third at 112 last year, and senior heavyweight Dylan Yeager also advanced into the quarterfinals by winning two matches.

Yeager won by pin at 3:34 against East Ridge's C.J. Baker, then got a 6-3 decision over Riverdale junior Alex Woods (Riverdale, 11) to make the quarters. Freeman defeated Clarksville junior Cody Oliver 8-0 after winning 7-4 over Cleveland's Joel Simpkins.

“Jacob and Dylan are wrestling at the top of their game right now and can go very far.  However, so are their opponents,” said RHS Coach Josh Peck.

Raptors senior captain Harrison Hawthorne, the region champ at 215 over BHS runner-up Coffey, forfeited his second-round match to William Blount’s T.J. Satterfield. Peck is hopeful Hawthorne will recover from injury in time to return for Friday consolation rounds.

“We had a rough day, and [Friday] will probably be tougher,”  Peck said. “It is always hard when  a wrestler’s season comes to an end after years of hard work.”

RHS sent 12 wrestlers into the state tournament, which has 14 weight classes, and seven of the qualifiers came away with a first-round victory. Four of seven Bruins won their opening matches.

Ravenwood’s Freeman faces Arlington senior Chandler Duncan in the 119 quarterfinals, while Yeager takes on Bradley Central junior Patrick Benson at 285. Benson placed fifth in state last year.

Brentwood’s Hamilton goes against Science Hill senior Javier Tapia in the 135 quarters, and Coffey Rossview’s Tyler Todd at 215.

Brentwood seniors Powell Newbern (130) and Juan Garcia (145) also won their opening bouts before losing in the Round of 16. Garcia won by pin in 5:36 over Brandon Townsend of Barlett, while Newbern had a 9-4 decision against Nick Malyar of Elizabethton.

In the first round for Ravenwood, Keuhnhold pinned Science Hill junior Derek Sutherland in 3:20, and regional champ Hawthorne had a pin over fTullahoma's Phillip Lett at 1:55. Mabry shut out Hixson's Justin Mathieson 7-0, while won 12-8 over ulton’s Steve Wilson.

Kuehnhold, Gray, Mabry, Stewart and Hawthorne all drop into the consolation bracket for Friday’s second round, with all 12 Raptors still able to earn team points and keep competing. Winning first-round consolations were sophomores Jacob Travis (103) and Tanner Reynolds (135); juniors Jack Finnegan (125) and Grant Jones (152); and senior Ryan Churchill (130).

Churchill had to face two-time state 125-pound champ Campbell Lewis of Soddy-Daisy in his opener.

“Right now after the first rough day, I am just happy to say that Ravenwood has 12 wrestlers still in the tournament,” Peck said.

Thursday night’s consolation victories included a 15-1 technical fall by Travis and a pin by Reynolds.

All but one of the Bruins also remain in competition, with seniors Ben Smith (119) and Chris Hoop (171) winning in the consolation first round. Newbern and Garcia will join them in the consolation second round Friday.
